The Case

The Marigold has lain at anchor in Blackthorn Cove for three days, hidden behind the island by a wall of gray rock, waiting for the wind to swing. Captain Halloran's order was given on the first evening and given only once: nobody sets foot ashore — not for water, not for firewood, not for anything at all. And yet on each of the three mornings since, the ship's boat has been wet. Tom Pike is twelve and the youngest aboard, which means the boat is his to scrub, and a boat that has been in the water at night is not a hard thing to spot. This morning the painter is soaked all the way through and cold as a fish, and when he turns it over, somebody has been at it.

How the Reading Mystery Works

Students take on the role of Reading Detectives. They read the passage, answer each multiple-choice question from the text, and cross off the suspect shown beneath the correct answer. The clues are physical and small — a wet rope, a cold knot, a mark in the sand — so a careful reader gets there and a skimmer does not. Every right answer removes a name, and the last person standing went ashore.
