The 2 Cases

THE MISSING PENCIL CASE — Maya's red pencil case, holding the twelve coloured pencils her grandmother sent from overseas, disappears from a locked classroom over the weekend, and nothing else in the room has been touched. Sixteen people were in Room 12 on Friday afternoon, and one of them knows exactly where it went.

THE CLASSROOM KEY — The brass key to Room 12 is hung back on hook seven at eleven o'clock and gone by twenty to four, with thirty school bags and the trip money behind that door. Sixteen people passed through the staffroom that day, and only the clues will say which one left with something that was not theirs.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Zero prep — print and go, no cutting, no laminating, no locks to buy
  • Self-checking: two suspects left standing means a question to go back to, so students catch their own mistakes
  • The detective hook pulls in reluctant and struggling readers who switch off at a worksheet
  • Two separate cases make it easy to split across a week, differentiate, or hold one back for a sub day
  • Teacher instructions on page one, so anybody can pick it up and run it

How ELA Mysteries Work

Each ELA Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn skill practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the language detective. They read a story, work through the clues, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Answer the Questions

Students work through a set of questions built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. A wrong answer means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
