Grade 2 FAQ

What math do 2nd graders learn?

Common Core 2nd grade math has four domains: operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. The main work is place value to 1,000, adding and subtracting fluently within 20 and within 100, and solving one- and two-step word problems. Students also tell time to the nearest five minutes, solve money problems, measure length in standard units, and make picture and bar graphs.

What addition and subtraction facts should a 2nd grader know?

By the end of 2nd grade, students should add and subtract within 20 fluently using mental strategies and know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory (2.OA.B.2). They should also add and subtract within 100 fluently using place value strategies (2.NBT.B.5) and add and subtract within 1,000 using models, drawings and strategies (2.NBT.B.7).

What place value do 2nd graders need to know?

Second graders learn that the digits of a three-digit number stand for hundreds, tens and ones, and that 100 is a bundle of ten tens (2.NBT.A.1). They count within 1,000, skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s, read and write numbers in standard form, word form and expanded form, and compare three-digit numbers using >, = and <.

Do 2nd graders learn multiplication?

Not formally. Second grade builds the groundwork: students use addition to find the total number of objects in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and 5 columns and write an equation as a sum of equal addends (2.OA.C.4). They also decide whether a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even. Multiplication and division facts begin in 3rd grade.

What should I leave for a substitute in 2nd grade math?

Leave no-prep, self-checking work that reviews skills the class has already learned, so students can work independently and the substitute can check answers quickly. A printable review packet with an answer key covering word problems, two-digit addition and subtraction, time, measurement and graphs works well for a full math block.

What subjects do you have for 2nd grade?

Math is the biggest set, with cases for every grade-level standard listed above. There are also reading, science, ELA, social studies, phonics activities in the same detective format: students solve each question, match the answer to a suspect and cross suspects off until one is left.
