The Case

The Halloween Lantern Contest judges reach Willow Hollow Elementary at noon, and the lantern Room 12 carved for it is sitting exactly where they left it on the front steps. Same size. Same crooked grin. Same three square teeth. It is not their lantern. What follows is one hour of that morning in two places at once — the front steps, where Mr. Pell is sweeping and stops because the lantern is wrong and he cannot say how, and the loading dock, where Mrs. Duarte is signing for a delivery. Neither of them sees the whole thing. Students do.

How the Reading Mystery Works

Students take on the role of Reading Detectives. They read the passage, answer each multiple-choice question from the text, and cross off the suspect shown beneath the correct answer. Because the story runs in two places at the same time, students have to hold both threads and line the timings up — every right answer removes a name, and the last person standing made the swap.
