The Case

For fourteen mornings running, somebody has been slipping a thirteenth bun into every dozen. Iris now unlocks at four and waits at the counter, and the bun is already there. Sixteen people work in that bakery before the doors open, every one of them was there on all fourteen mornings, and one of them is doing it. Here is the hard part: nobody wrote down what happened in the bakery, so there is no account of it to read. What students have instead is a folder of five ordinary pieces of writing about baking — and the words around a word are the only evidence there is.

The 5 Passages

The Second Loaf — realistic fiction. A birthday loaf comes out the size of a house brick, and the second attempt goes differently.

My Week at Pellow's — journal entries. Seven days in a working bakery, written up each night.

Dear Gran — letter. A recipe, a question and a bit of news.

Big Mabel's Rising Dough — tall tale. Dough that will not stop rising, told with a straight face.

The Night Ovens — poem. The bakery between midnight and dawn.

How the Reading Mystery Works

Students take on the role of Reading Detectives. The five passages are not connected to each other. Each is followed by three questions that turn on working out what a word means here, plus a PROVE IT prompt asking for the exact words that gave the meaning away. Every correct answer clears one name from the sixteen-suspect list. Clear fifteen, and the name still standing is the one adding the extra bun.
