Early Multiplication Arrays | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades K–4 | Monster Theme

$4.00 USD

Early multiplication arrays worksheets for 1st grade and 2nd grade, ten beginner math pages with a Mystery Detective twist, equal groups and small arrays a first grader can count. No prep, print and go, full answer keys, for math centers, morning work, early finishers, homework and sub plans as soon as skip counting starts. Students count the rows and columns, write the multiplication, and every correct answer takes a suspect off the board until the teacher who turned into a monster stands alone, five cases asking for the product and five for the factors, so one CSI Mini Mystery Detective download covers the first two weeks of arrays with the checking built into the page.

This is the step where counting in twos and fives turns into something a child can write down, and reading an array as three rows of four rather than twelve dots needs more repeats than any single worksheet allows. Ten cases spread it across two weeks, and a class asks for the next one. Small arrays, one Mystery Detective hunt, math that marks itself.

The Ten Cases

  • Cases one to five - read the array, write the product
  • Cases six to ten - read the same kind of array, write the factors
  • Twelve arrays on every case, each answer knocking out a clue
  • Small arrays throughout, the sizes a first grade class can count
  • One running story - a teacher in the school has turned into a monster

What's Inside

  • Ten case files in full color
  • The same ten cases again in black and white for cheap printing
  • Answer keys for every case
  • A wanted poster and banner deck for the classroom wall
  • A teacher instruction page - print and go, nothing to cut or laminate
  • Everything bundled as a single download

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

One printed page holding one crime and the clue lists that solve it. Each clue carries a number beside it, the twelve questions on the page produce those numbers, and a correct answer knocks a clue out. Work to the last array and a single suspect is left standing. Count one row wrong and nothing matches, so the page marks itself.

When to Use This Resource

Use this when a class can skip count aloud but has not yet seen why the multiplication sign is any use, which is usually late in 1st grade or the first weeks of 2nd. It also works as a gentle way back in for a second grader who has lost confidence with times tables. Reach for it in math centers, morning work, early finishers, homework, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a whole class, a small group, partners or one student.

Grade Levels

Written for 1st grade and 2nd grade. First graders meet arrays here for the first time, and second graders use the set before formal multiplication facts start.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Products and factors both covered, so the array is read two ways
  • A wrong count matches no clue, so students correct themselves
  • Color and black and white are both in the download
  • The posters turn a worksheet into a classroom display

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
