Bar Graphs and Pictographs | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 2–4 | Scaled Data

$4.50 USD

Bar graph activities, pictograph worksheets, and picture graph practice for 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade math are all included in this Mini Mystery Detective pack. Students become detectives as they read a scaled bar graph or a picture graph, compare the categories, work out how many more and how many fewer, and solve two-step problems to eliminate suspects and crack the case. Perfect for math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans, and test prep, and completely no prep - just print and go.

Built-In Differentiation

The cases get harder as the pack goes on, so one resource stretches across your whole class. The first cases use a small scale where each picture stands for 2, then the key moves to 5 and to 10, and the bar graphs move from counting in 2s to reading a value that lands between two gridlines. A student who is behind works on the same case, with the same detective hook, as everyone else - they simply start earlier in the pack.

What's Inside

  • Reading a value off a scaled bar graph, including bars that stop between two gridlines
  • Reading a picture graph and using the key to work out what each symbol is worth
  • Counting symbols on a row, and working out what half a symbol stands for
  • How many more and how many fewer between two categories
  • The greatest and the least category, and the difference between them
  • Adding two and three categories together, and finding the total across the whole graph
  • How many were not in one category, and not in two categories - a two-step subtraction
  • Two-step problems that combine categories before comparing them
  • Working out how many symbols would be drawn for a given number
  • Scales in 2s, 5s and 10s, vertical bar graphs, horizontal bar graphs and picture graphs
  • Real data contexts: bugs caught, laps run, reward stars, eggs collected, cans donated, kites sold, coins counted, tent pegs used, flags made, shells collected
  • Self-checking answer keys for every case

Ten detective cases to solve: The Bug Jar Bungle, The Lost Lap Sheet, The Star Chart Swap, The Egg Tray Tangle, The Can Drive Caper, The Kite Stall Mix, The Coin Jar Case, The Tent Peg Puzzle, The Flag Day Fiasco, and The Shell Bag Switch. Answer keys are included for all ten.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

A Mystery Detective is an interactive, independent activity that feels like a classroom escape room - without locks or complicated prep. Instead of codes, students solve math problems to uncover clues, cross suspects off the list, and work out who the villain is. Because every correct answer eliminates exactly one suspect, the page checks itself: if the numbers do not match up, students know to go back and look again.

When to Use This Resource

  • Math centers and small group rotations
  • Morning work and bell ringers
  • Early finishers who need a challenge
  • Substitute teacher plans
  • Data and graphing review before state testing
  • Homework and independent practice
  • End-of-unit review and spiral practice

Grade Levels

Designed for 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade data and graphing. The early cases with a small key also work well for struggling 5th graders who need to revisit reading a graph, and the later cases with half symbols and between-the-gridlines reading suit advanced 2nd graders who are ready for a scaled graph.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

  • Feels like a math escape room, with no locks, tech, or setup required
  • Self-checking - every correct answer removes one suspect
  • Detective storyline keeps students working through a full page of data questions
  • Zero prep - simply print and go
  • Works for independent practice, partners, small groups, or a whole class challenge
  • Builds graph literacy, comparison language, and two-step problem solving at the same time

Pair it with Graphing Bar Graphs Pictographs and Picture Graphs Data Worksheets and Activities for the make-a-graph half of the unit - that pack has students building graphs, while this one has them using graphs to solve problems: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Graphing-Bar-Graphs-Pictographs-Picture-Graphs-Data-Worksheets-Activities-3776790

Students who enjoy this one will also like the Line Plots with Fractions Mystery Detective, the natural next step in the same data unit.

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
