Antonyms and Synonyms | ELA Mystery Worksheets | Grades 1–4 | Vocabulary

$4.50 USD

Antonyms and synonyms practice turns into a monster-detective case — one of the teachers around the school has secretly turned into a monster, and students crack the case by finding the antonym or synonym of each picture-word, crossing suspects off until only the monster teacher is left. This no-prep, printable, self-checking ELA Mystery keeps 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders engaged and works perfectly for literacy centers, morning work, homework, early finishers, substitute/relief days, indoor recess, spiral review, and vocabulary test prep. Just print and go — students match the antonym or synonym, eliminate suspects, and reveal who the monster is.

Quick Details

Skill: Antonyms & synonyms (opposites and similar-meaning words) · Grades: 1st–4th · Format: 8 mysteries (4 antonym + 4 synonym versions) in colour AND black & white + full answer keys (printable PDF) · Theme: Monster detective

The Mystery

"Which teacher turned into a monster?" — In every version, one teacher on the suspect list has secretly turned into a monster. Students look at each picture and word, find its antonym (opposite) or synonym (same meaning) in the clue list, and cross that suspect off. After all 12 questions, one teacher is left un-crossed — that's the monster! There are 8 differentiated versions in all: 4 that practice antonyms and 4 that practice synonyms, so you can build the challenge or reuse it across the week.

Why Teachers Love It

Zero prep — print and teach. The built-in answer keys make every version self-checking, so students get instant feedback and stay motivated. The monster-detective hook pulls in reluctant and struggling readers, and the picture support plus 8 leveled versions (colour and black & white) make it easy to differentiate across a mixed-ability class.

Skills Covered

Identifying antonyms (opposites) and synonyms (similar-meaning words), building vocabulary and word relationships, plus logical reasoning and deductive elimination as students rule suspects out clue by clue.

How ELA Mysteries Work

Each ELA Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn skill practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the language detective. They read a story, work through the clues, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Answer the Questions

Students work through a set of questions built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. A wrong answer means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
