Inside the case file

The town of Hollow Creek is running out of water — and overnight someone drained its last emergency supply. This printable Droughts Reading Mystery turns an extreme-weather science passage into a reading-detective investigation for Grades 3–6 classroom teachers, homeschoolers, and tutors. It drops straight into a weather, water cycle, or natural disasters unit and gives students a real reason to read closely.

Reading is the whole game here: students use text evidence to cross off suspects one at a time until the culprit is cornered. No apps, no laminating, no prep.

The Case

The town of Hollow Creek has been gripped by drought for months, and overnight someone drained its emergency water tanks and jammed the backup pipeline. A line-up of suspects is waiting, but it is up to your students to uncover the truth. The only way to crack the case is to read the passage closely and use every comprehension answer as a clue to rule a suspect out, until just one remains.

How the Reading Mystery Works

As Reading Detectives, students read about the science of droughts — how they form, why they are dangerous, and how they are forecast — and eliminate a suspect with each comprehension answer until one is left standing. The text holds every clue.
