6th Grade Review | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Back to School | Ratios Percent Area

$5.00 USD

Ratio tables and unit rate, dividing fractions by fractions, percent of a quantity, integers and absolute value, one-step equations, area of triangles and quadrilaterals, surface area from nets, exponents, mean and median, and dot plots for 6th grade are all included in this back to school Mini Mystery Detective review pack. Ten one-page detective cases cover a whole year of 6th grade math, perfect for beginning of the year review, math centers, early finishers, sub plans, homework, morning work and small group practice. Use it as a spiral review in the first weeks back, as cumulative practice before a test, or as an end-of-year wrap-up — the ten topics stand alone, so you can hand out one case a day or the whole pack at once. Completely no prep - just print and go.

What's Inside

Ten one-page cases, one math topic each:

  • Ratio tables and unit rate: work out the rate that runs across a table, then fill in the missing value
  • Dividing a fraction by a fraction: how many 1/4 cups fit in 3 cups, and quotients such as 5/6 divided by 1/3
  • Percent of a quantity, both ways: every clue is a price tag showing an amount and a percent, and students find either the AMOUNT OFF or the FULL PRICE the discount came from
  • Exponents and numerical expressions: squares, cubes, brackets and division, solved in the right order
  • Integers and absolute value: read two marked points off a temperature line, then give the value, its opposite, its absolute value, a sum or a difference
  • One-step equations: every clue is a balance scale carrying equal unknown weights and a known weight, so students see what x has to be for the scale to balance
  • Mean, median and range from a set of results
  • Area of triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, each with its height marked
  • Reading a dot plot: how many, how many more, totals, range, median and the largest group
  • Surface area from a net: unfold a rectangular prism and add the area of all six faces

Ten themed cases to solve: The Mixed-Up Recipe, The Split Rations, The Discount Dodge, The Coded Lockers, The Freezer File, The Balanced Books, The Muddled Scores, The Crooked Signs, The Practice Log and The Flat-Pack Fraud.

Answer keys included for every page.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

A print-and-solve detective activity - an escape room without the locks. Each page is one case with a list of suspects, and every suspect wears an ID badge with a number on it. Students solve the problems, match each answer to a suspect and cross that suspect off. Sixteen correct answers eliminate sixteen suspects, and the one left standing is the villain.

That makes the page self-checking. If a student's answers do not clear the board, they know something is wrong before you ever mark it.

When to Use This Resource

  • Back to school and beginning of the year review
  • Math centers and rotations
  • Morning work and bell ringers
  • Early finishers and fast finisher folders
  • Emergency sub plans
  • Homework and independent practice
  • Small group and intervention review
  • End of year revision and test prep

Grade Levels

Designed for 6th grade. Also ideal for rising 6th graders reviewing at the start of the year, for 7th grade students who need a refresher on 6th grade skills, and as a challenge for advanced 5th graders.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

  • Zero prep - print and go, in black and white
  • Self-checking, so students catch their own mistakes
  • One page per topic, so you can use them in any order
  • Covers a whole year of 6th grade standards in one resource
  • The detective hook keeps students working through problems they would skip on a plain worksheet
  • Answer keys for every single page

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
