Thanksgiving 3 Digit Addition with Regrouping Mystery Detective Activity

$4.00 USD

3 digit addition with regrouping Thanksgiving math worksheets for 2nd grade and 3rd grade, five Mystery Detective math cases with a turkey story on every page. No prep November math activities, print and go with full answer keys, for math centers, morning work, early finishers, homework and sub plans. Somebody baked for the staffroom, the turkey has gone and the yard was swept overnight; the right sum crosses a suspect off the lineup and the wrong one crosses off nobody, so a CSI Mini Mystery Detective is the carrying practice a class needs before the holidays.

Thanksgiving week is made for a hunt like this: a class will happily add their way to the missing turkey when every sum is a clue. One CSI Mini Mystery Detective math case fits a morning work slot, so the five cover the short week, and the answer keys mean the marking is done before the pie.

The Cases

  1. Who is left the lunch for the teachers? - somebody baked for the staffroom
  2. Who took the acorns? - the squirrel's store is empty
  3. A huge pumpkin at school - nobody knows who brought it in
  4. Where is the turkey? - the turkey has gone missing
  5. Who swept the leaves up? - the yard is suddenly spotless

What's Inside

  • Five case files, each with a crime sheet and its own lineup of suspects
  • Three digit addition with regrouping on every page
  • A Thanksgiving setting: the turkey, the pumpkin and a very tidy yard
  • Each answer matches one suspect and no other, so the page checks itself
  • A full answer key for every case
  • Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is one printed page carrying one crime and one lineup. Each suspect has a number, the crime sheet produces those numbers, and a correct answer removes that suspect until a single name is left. Nothing is laminated, charged or bought, so the math does the whole job, and that is the difference between these detective activities and a page of math worksheets. A case runs about a class period.

When to Use This Resource

The week before Thanksgiving is the hardest teaching week of the fall and this set is built for it: real regrouping practice in a form the class will sit down and finish. It is also the obvious thing to leave for a substitute on the short days either side of the break. A missed carry takes out the wrong suspect, so students correct themselves while you get on with everything else that week.

It suits test prep, homework, math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a whole class, a small group or one child alone.

Grade Levels

Written for 2nd grade and 3rd grade, where three digit regrouping sits in the standards. Fourth graders take it as a November refresher, and second graders manage it once two digit carrying is secure.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Holds a class together in the week before a break
  • Students find their own carrying slips when the wrong name comes off
  • No prep in a week when you have none to spare
  • Works with a whole class, a small group, partners, or one student alone

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
