Pythagorean Theorem | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 7–9 | Missing Sides and Distance

$4.50 USD

Pythagorean Theorem activities, right triangle worksheets, and distance on the coordinate plane practice for 8th grade math are all included in this Mini Mystery Detective pack. Students find the missing side of each figure, then use their answers to eliminate suspects and unmask the villain. Perfect for geometry review, math centers, early finishers, sub plans, test prep and homework, and completely no prep - just print and go.

Every figure is drawn and fully labeled, so no measuring is needed. The first cases use whole-number answers to build confidence; the later cases ask for answers rounded to the nearest tenth, exactly as a textbook would.

What's Inside

  • Finding the hypotenuse of a right triangle from its two legs
  • Finding a missing leg when the hypotenuse and one leg are given
  • Right triangles drawn in every orientation, so the hypotenuse is found opposite the right angle rather than guessed by position
  • Finding the diagonal of a rectangle or a square from its width and height
  • Finding the distance between two points on a coordinate grid
  • Real-world word problems: ladders, ramps, roof spans, gates, zip lines, kite strings and drones
  • Finding the diagonal running corner to corner through a rectangular box, in three dimensions
  • Finding the height of an isosceles triangle by splitting it into two right triangles
  • Finding the sloping side of a trapezoid by dropping a perpendicular
  • Multi-step work: finding a missing side first, then the perimeter or the area of the triangle
  • Rounding irrational answers to the nearest tenth
  • Red-ink answer keys for every case

Ten detective cases to solve: The Roof Truss Riddle, The Fence Post Puzzle, The Screen Size Swap, The Map Grid Mix-Up, The Site Plan Shuffle, The Packed Crate Plot, The Camp Tent Tangle, The Skate Ramp Racket, The Pennant Panic and The Sail Loft Switch. Answer keys included for every case.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

A Mystery Detective is a print-and-solve detective activity - like a classroom escape room without the locks or the prep. Every answer matches one suspect's ID badge, so each triangle a student works out crosses another name off the list. The badge left unmatched at the end belongs to the villain, which makes the page self-checking: if two suspects are still standing, something needs another look. Real skill practice, critical thinking, and a detective hook that keeps the whole class working.

When to Use This Resource

  • Geometry review before state testing
  • Math centers and small groups
  • Morning work and bell ringers
  • Early finishers and enrichment
  • Substitute teacher plans
  • Homework and spiral review
  • End-of-unit right triangle practice
  • Back to school and end of year review

Grade Levels

Designed for 8th grade geometry and measurement. Also beneficial for 7th graders being introduced to square roots and right triangles, for 9th and 10th graders revisiting the theorem at the start of high school Geometry, and for advanced students ready for three-dimensional and multi-step problems.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

  • Zero prep - print and hand out
  • Self-checking, so students catch their own mistakes before you do
  • Every triangle, rectangle, box and grid is drawn and labeled, with no measuring required
  • Each figure is drawn to its own scale, so the missing side has to be calculated and cannot be measured off the page
  • Ten separate cases, so the pack covers a whole run of lessons rather than a single sheet
  • Detective storyline keeps reluctant mathematicians working to the last question
  • Works for independent practice, partners, small groups or a whole-class challenge

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
