Inside the case file
These angle relationships math worksheets give your 7th grade and 8th grade class ten CSI Mini Mystery Detective math cases on missing angles, angle pairs and parallel lines cut by a transversal. Students use vertical, complementary and supplementary angles, corresponding and alternate interior angles, the triangle sum theorem and the exterior angle theorem to write equations and solve for x. It's one middle school geometry pack for both 7.G.B.5 and 8.G.A.5, with a bank vault theme. Put the cases in your math centers or use them for homework and test prep. They're no prep, and every case has an answer key.
Every diagram in this pack is drawn to scale, with the angles labeled a, b and c and their measures written beside the picture. Students find x first and then the angle itself, which is the two-step working the 7th and 8th grade standards ask for. They can also look back at the drawing and see whether a 40° answer really looks like 40°. Each answer crosses off one suspect, and the pages are self-checking.
What's Inside
- 10 one-page cases with 20 questions each, 200 problems in all
- An answer key for every case
- 8 pages of diagrams and 2 pages of angle word problems
- A reference page with labeled sketches of two crossing lines, a transversal with angles 1 to 8, and a triangle with an exterior angle. You can project it or hand it out as notes
- Contents, teacher instructions, a case log and a Chief Angle Detective certificate
- 30 pages, all black and white
The Cases
- The Tripped Alarm - missing angles on a line and around a point
- The Crossed Beams - vertical, supplementary and complementary angles with x
- The Night Guard's Notebook - complementary and supplementary word problems
- The Parallel Beams - parallel lines cut by a transversal
- The Mirror Trap - a triangle between parallel lines
- The Three Spotlights - triangle sum theorem with x
- The Outside Job - exterior angle theorem with x
- The Coded Blueprints - transversal and triangle word problems
- The Laser Grid - missing angles without equations
- The Empty Vault - mixed review of every page
When to Use This Resource
In 7th grade, start with the first three cases once your class has learned complementary, supplementary and vertical angles and is writing equations for a missing angle. 8th grade classes can begin at The Parallel Beams, where the parallel lines, transversal and triangle angle work starts. Each case is a single page, and it works well as practice after a lesson or alongside your textbook. The Laser Grid and The Empty Vault mix both years together, and they're useful before a unit test. A single case also suits a small group, a sub day, an early finisher or a geometry review at the start of 8th grade.
Grade Levels
Written for 7th grade (7.G.B.5) and 8th grade (8.G.A.5). High school geometry classes can use it to review angle facts before proofs.
Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives
Every Mystery Detective pack works the same way. Once your class has solved one case, they know what to do with the next one, in this pack or any other. Each case also stands on its own, which means you can choose the one that fits what you're teaching that day. Naming the villain gives every page a clear end point, and the answer key lets you check a page quickly.
