2-Digit Addition & Subtraction | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 1–3 | Halloween

$4.00 USD

Halloween 2 digit addition and subtraction worksheets for 1st grade and 2nd grade: five October math case files, Mystery Detective style, both skills on the same page. Print and go with full answer keys: no prep math activities for morning work, math centers, early finishers, homework and sub plans. Halloween math for 1st grade and 2nd grade, with 2 digit addition and subtraction on the same page and a witch to catch, so both skills get practiced in October. It fits Halloween math centers, morning work and early finishers, with a CSI Mini Mystery Detective story on every page.

October is the month a young class will do almost anything for a good story, and a teacher turned into a skunk keeps them adding and subtracting for a week. Students rule out a suspect with every answer on the way to the witch, and one case fits a morning work slot. Each CSI Mini Mystery Detective math sheet is self-marking.

The Cases

  1. Skunk Surprise - the teacher has been turned into a skunk
  2. Trick or Treat Teacher - a student surprised the teacher
  3. Mouse Mischief - a friend is now a mouse
  4. Under The Costume - who is inside that costume
  5. Costume Competition - a winner, and no name read out

What's Inside

  • Five Halloween cases, each a page of 2 digit addition and subtraction
  • Sixteen questions per case, mixing both operations
  • Clue lists beside the questions, so one answer removes one clue
  • A black and white copy of all five cases for everyday printing
  • An answer key for every case
  • Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is one printed page with a crime at the top and short clue lists beside the questions. Every clue carries a number, the questions produce those numbers, and a correct answer crosses that clue off. Whatever is left at the end is the solution. Nothing is cut, laminated or charged, so the arithmetic does the whole job and a wrong answer fits nothing.

When to Use This Resource

The two weeks before Halloween are the obvious spot, and the day itself in particular, when a costume parade has already taken the morning and the class will not settle to anything ordinary. These also work as a straight two digit review at any point in the fall, because the mixed operations page is the same either way. Everything is printed on the sheet, so it goes into the sub folder as it is.

Use it for morning work, math centers, early finishers, homework, class parties, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a whole class, a small group or one student.

Grade Levels

Written for 1st grade and 2nd grade. First graders use these once two digit work has started, and second graders use them as a mixed operations review in the fall.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • A young class stays with it, which is the whole trick in October
  • Nothing to prepare beyond pressing print
  • Five cases covers the two weeks before Halloween
  • Works with a whole class, a small group, partners or one student

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
