Converting Customary Units of Length | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 4–6 | Printable Detective Pack

$4.00 USD

Converting customary units of length worksheets for 4th grade and 5th grade: inches, feet and yards, converted both ways across five CSI Mini Mystery Detective math cases where each answer crosses a suspect off the lineup. A conversion that matches no suspect sends the student back to the page, so this measurement math is self-checking without any marking from you. Print and go with full answer keys: math activities for the measurement unit, then math centers, early finishers, homework, morning work, test prep and sub plans.

Unit conversion is usually one lesson and a page of practice, and five CSI Mini Mystery Detective math cases stretch it into a week of measurement work a class will actually finish. Students convert, match the answer to a name and cross it off, which suits partners as well as a whole class, and the answer keys mean nothing needs marking twice.

Some problems go from a bigger unit to a smaller one, like 7 yards to feet, and others go back the other way, like 96 inches to feet. Students find their answer in the clue lists and cross that clue off. The stories cover an art heist, a stolen soccer ball and a mad scientist's lab.

The Cases

  1. The Art Gallery Theft - a painting taken from the gallery
  2. Championship Soccer Ball - the match ball goes missing
  3. Rare Book Disappearance - a rare book gone from the library
  4. Experimental Lab - an experiment sabotaged
  5. The Bank Vault - a robbery at the bank

What's Inside

  • Five measurement cases
  • Inches, feet and yards
  • Conversions both ways
  • An answer key for each case
  • A teacher instruction page

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

It's one page per case. The problems are on the left, and the clue lists on the right show suspects, places and motives, each with a number. Students cross off the clues that match their answers until one of each is left.

When to Use This Resource

Use these once your class knows the relationships between inches, feet and yards and is ready to use them. They suit a measurement review before a test too. Try them with a small group, as bell ringers or on a sub day.

Grade Levels

Written for 4th grade and 5th grade. 6th graders can use them as a quick review before metric conversions and unit rates.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Conversions in both directions
  • Five different stories
  • No prep
  • Students check their own answers

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
