2-Digit Addition with Regrouping | Winter Mini Mystery | Grades 1–3 | Detective Mystery

$4.00 USD

Winter snow day 2 digit addition with regrouping worksheets for 1st grade and 2nd grade, five short Mystery Detective math cases for the weeks after the holidays. No prep, full answer keys, print and go: math centers, morning work, early finishers, homework and sub plans for December, January and February. Hot chocolate, a snowball fight and a snow angel with no footprints carry the theme, each total crosses a suspect off the lineup until one name is left, and the carrying underneath is the practice a young class needs, one CSI Mini Mystery Detective page at a time.

January is when a young class needs a reason to sit and add, and a snow angel nobody will own up to is a better reason than a worksheet. Each total a child finds rules a suspect out, one CSI Mini Mystery Detective math case fits a morning work slot, and the answer keys are behind every page so the marking is done before recess.

The Cases

  1. Hot Chocolate - who made the teacher a hot chocolate
  2. Winter Scarf - left behind in the classroom
  3. Toboggan - everybody wants the next run
  4. Snowball Fight - who threw the very first one
  5. Snow Angel - a snow angel and no footprints

What's Inside

  • Five case files, each with a crime sheet and its own lineup of suspects
  • Two digit addition with regrouping, with carrying on most problems
  • Sums in columns with room to write the carried ten
  • Each answer matches one suspect and no other, so the page checks itself
  • A full answer key for every case
  • Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is one page, one crime and one class period. Each suspect in the lineup is tagged with a number, the questions produce those numbers, and a correct answer knocks a suspect out until the last one standing is the culprit. Nothing needs cutting, laminating or charging, which is why these detective activities get handed out on days that would otherwise call for math worksheets. It works as a lesson, in math centers, or left for a substitute.

When to Use This Resource

December through February, and especially the day a snow day has wrecked your plan and half the class is somewhere else. Carrying needs regular short practice to stay put, and five short cases give you five days of it without repeating a page. Because the wrong total crosses off the wrong suspect, a child who forgets the carry finds out right there instead of at the end of the week.

Use it for test prep, homework, math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a whole class, a small group or one child.

Grade Levels

Written for 1st grade and 2nd grade, where two digit regrouping sits in the standards. Third graders take it as a start of year warm up, and first graders manage it once adding without carrying is secure.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Five short cases, so you get five days of practice from one download
  • Students spot a missed carry when the wrong suspect comes off the lineup
  • No prep on the mornings when nothing goes to plan
  • Works with a whole class, a small group, partners, or one student alone

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
