Spring math activities for March, April and May, with no holiday attached so they run the whole season. Two digit addition with regrouping for 1st grade and 2nd grade, across five CSI Mini Mystery Detective math case files, where every correct answer rules one suspect out of the lineup until a single name is left. That gives you math worksheets and math activities in one no prep download, then math centers, early finishers, homework, morning work, sub plans, test prep and spiral review. No prep CSI math, with detective activities and full answer keys.
There is no holiday tied to this one, so it runs right through March, April and May. Every total a student works out rules one suspect out, so a six or seven year old stays with the page for their own reasons. The cases are short enough to use as morning work, and the answer keys are already written.
The Cases
-
Flowers for the Teacher - flowers and no card with them
-
Acts of Kindness - good deeds with nobody taking credit
-
Spring Clean - the room is spotless by morning
-
The Missing Toy - taken right out of the classroom
-
The Missing Raincoat - gone in the middle of a downpour
What's Inside
- Five case files, each with a crime sheet and its own lineup of suspects
- Two digit addition with regrouping on every page
- Sums set out in columns, so carrying the ten is the skill on show
- Each answer matches one suspect and no other, so the page checks itself
- A full answer key for every case
- Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare
What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?
A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is a single page case your class cracks with math. The suspects stand in a lineup with a number each, the crime sheet produces those numbers, and a correct answer knocks one suspect out until the last name standing is the culprit. There is no kit and nothing to assemble, so what carries it is the arithmetic, which is what makes detective activities land where math worksheets slide off. One case runs a class period.
When to Use This Resource
Carrying is the first real hurdle in second grade addition, and this set is the practice that follows the teaching without feeling like more of the same. Spring with no holiday in it means you can use these across March, April and May, or save them for the two weeks either side of a break when nothing else holds. The wrong sum takes out the wrong suspect, so a child who forgets to carry sees it happen.
It covers test prep, homework, math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a class, a small group or one child alone.
Grade Levels
Written for 1st grade and 2nd grade, where two digit regrouping sits in the standards. Third graders take it as a warm up before three digit numbers, and first graders manage it once they are adding two digit numbers without carrying.
Why Teachers Love These Cases
- Built on carrying the ten, which is the step that trips first and second graders
- Students correct themselves when the wrong suspect comes off the lineup
- No prep, and the answer keys make grading quick
- Works with a whole class, a small group, partners, or one student alone
