Inside the case file

This Thanksgiving reading comprehension escape room gives your 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students five short reading passages and 25 comprehension questions in one digital game. The passages mix fiction and nonfiction: a story, a recipe, a friendly letter and two articles. Questions cover main idea, key details, vocabulary in context, sequence and text features. It's a Thanksgiving escape room you can run as a November literacy center, play together on the board, or hand to early finishers. There's no prep. You share one link and the game checks the answers.

In this one, Tom the turkey hides from Farmer Fran by trying on five disguises, and your class builds them. Each right answer adds a costume piece to Tom, and students can reopen the passage whenever they want to check something. If they pick a wrong answer, Tom tells them why it doesn't fit. It makes Thanksgiving reading practice feel like a holiday treat.

The Story

It's Thanksgiving morning at Maple Hill Farm, and Farmer Fran is calling for Tom. Tom thinks he knows why she wants him, and he isn't sticking around to find out. He needs a disguise. Actually, he needs five. After each disguise is finished, Farmer Fran walks right past him. At the end, Tom learns she only wanted him in the family's Thanksgiving photo.

The Five Disguises

  1. The Scarecrow (cornfield) - an article on why farms have scarecrows: main idea, sections, word meaning
  2. The Chef (farmhouse kitchen) - a pumpkin muffin recipe: answer, then choose the words from the recipe that prove it
  3. The Football Player (backyard) - a story about a family football game: the lesson, why things happened, putting events in order
  4. The Mail Carrier (mailbox) - a thank-you letter: why it was written, word meaning, what happened next
  5. The Pumpkin (pumpkin patch) - an article on how pumpkins grow: main idea, a life cycle diagram, cause and effect

What's Inside

  • A digital Thanksgiving escape room with five farm settings, five original reading passages and 25 questions
  • Passages of about 190 to 215 words. Students can reopen them at any time.
  • Two articles, a recipe, a story and a letter
  • Kitchen questions in two steps: the answer first, then the proof
  • One question where students put story events in order, and one where they read a life cycle diagram
  • A short explanation from Tom after every wrong answer
  • A printable Master of Disguise certificate with the student's name, score, date and a family photo from the end of the game
  • A teacher guide PDF with the game link, how to run it and the standards

How It Works

When you buy, you download a PDF that holds the game link. Post the link in Google Classroom or your learning platform, or write the address on the board. The game runs in a web browser on Chromebooks, iPads and laptops. Students don't need logins, and there's nothing to install.

Please remember, this is a digital product. You will download a PDF with the link to the resource.

When to Use This Resource

Use it in the short week before Thanksgiving break, when you want real reading practice that still feels like a holiday activity. Students can play alone or with a partner. A small reading group can do one disguise a day across the week. It's also an easy sub day plan, since Tom explains wrong answers on his own, and it works for test prep review and for homeschool families in November.

Grade Levels

Written for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade reading standards. Third graders get plenty of practice with key details, text features and the order of events, and 4th and 5th grade students work on main idea, the lesson of a story and word meaning in both fiction and nonfiction.

Why Teachers Love It

  • No prep. Share one link.
  • Every answer is checked, and wrong answers come with a reason
  • Five different kinds of text in one game
  • A funny Thanksgiving story with a happy ending
  • Answer choices shuffle, so it can be played again
