Roman Numerals CSI Mystery Worksheets | Grades 4–8 | The Roman Invasion

$4.50 USD

Roman numerals CSI math worksheets that convert between numerals and ordinary numbers, built into a CSI Mystery Detective case your class can run alongside an Ancient Rome topic in November. The Romans are coming, the class scatters for cover, and the only way through is to identify their General from what the invaders left behind, all of it written in numerals. Pitched at 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade, with answer keys and color and black-and-white pages that print and run with no setup. Students count up through a maze, follow linked clues to one final number, check conversions for errors and close the mystery with a cryptogram, one suspect gone each time.

The Case: The Roman Invasion

THE ROMANS ARE COMING, yells your teacher, and the class scatters for cover. Taking them on directly is not going to work - there are far too many of them and they are far better at this. The only way through is to identify their General and outmanoeuvre him, and everything the Romans have left behind is written in numerals your students will have to learn to read.

What's Inside

  • Counting up in Roman numerals through a maze to reach the right box
  • A sequence of linked clues that builds to one final number
  • Converting Roman numerals to work out a position on a chart
  • Checking converted answers for errors and tallying which are correct
  • A cryptogram that only resolves once the earlier clues are right
  • Full color and black-and-white versions of every page
  • Answer keys for the whole case

What Is a CSI Mystery Detective Case?

A CSI Mystery Detective case is a printable whodunit in which the answers, not the clues, do the eliminating. Students work the page; each correct answer rules one suspect out; the last name standing is the arrest. Think math escape room with nothing to unlock and nothing to set up. Against ordinary math worksheets it has a built-in check - bad arithmetic leaves a description matching nobody - so students find their own mistakes. It works as a full math activity, in math centers, or as detective activities for early finishers.

When to Use This Resource

  • A Romans or ancient history topic, alongside your reading and writing work
  • Introducing or consolidating Roman numerals
  • Math centers, early finishers and independent work
  • Emergency sub plans that run themselves
  • Back-to-school weeks and end of year review

Grade Levels

Built for 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade. Third graders usually need the numeral chart beside them for the first two pages; fourth and fifth graders run the case independently. It also works for 6th grade students meeting Roman numerals for the first time.

Why Teachers Love CSI Mystery Detective Cases

  • Zero prep - print and hand out
  • Self-checking by design, because a wrong answer breaks the deduction
  • Roman numeral practice with a reason to be accurate
  • Works as a whole lesson, a center, or a filler for an awkward afternoon
