Pancake Day Addition & Subtraction CSI Mystery Worksheets | Grades 2–5 | The Half-Eaten Pancake

$4.50 USD

February and March bring Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday and Lent, and these CSI math worksheets turn all three into a CSI Mystery Detective case on addition, subtraction and number sequences. Mrs Wilson has made her pancakes every year and never written the recipe down, so when one turns up half eaten before anyone was meant to start, somebody could not wait. 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade students add and subtract three-digit and four-digit numbers, follow linked clues to one final number, and unscramble a word that only resolves once the earlier answers are right, eliminating a suspect at each step. Prints in color or black and white, with answer keys for the whole mystery.

The Case: The Half Eaten Pancake

Pancake Day is here and the whole school is looking forward to it, mostly because of Mrs Wilson. She has been making her pancakes for this day every year for as long as anyone can remember, and the recipe has never been written down. This morning one of them has been found half eaten, well before anybody was supposed to have started. Somebody could not wait.

What's Inside

  • Deciding which number problems are correct and counting up the results
  • A sequence of linked clues that builds to one final number
  • Addition and subtraction with three-digit and four-digit numbers
  • Checking worked answers for errors and tallying which are correct
  • A word unscramble that only resolves once the earlier answers are right
  • Full color and black-and-white versions of every page
  • Answer keys for the whole case

What Is a CSI Mystery Detective Case?

A CSI Mystery Detective case works the way a math escape room works, except the exit is a name rather than a lock. The class solves a page of math worksheets, each correct answer removes a suspect, and the last one left is the arrest. There is no app, no cutting and no prep. What it has that a practice page does not is a built-in check: wrong arithmetic leaves a description matching nobody. A math activity for a lesson, for math centers, or as detective activities for early finishers.

When to Use This Resource

  • Shrove Tuesday and the start of Lent, in February or March
  • The days before a holiday, when you still want real math done
  • Math centers, early finishers and independent work
  • Emergency sub plans that run themselves
  • End of year review, when attention is thin and the work still has to happen

Grade Levels

Built for 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade. Third graders usually pair up on the four-digit pages; fourth and fifth graders run the case independently inside a lesson. It also suits 2nd grade students who are ahead and want something with more thinking in it.

Why Teachers Love CSI Mystery Detective Cases

  • Zero prep - print and hand out
  • Self-checking by design, because a wrong answer breaks the deduction
  • A seasonal activity that still does real math
  • Works as a whole lesson, a center, or a filler for an awkward afternoon

3

Eliminate Suspects

4

Crack the Case

By the end, only one suspect remains and students can reveal the answer to the mystery.
