Order of Operations (No Exponents / PEMDAS) | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 4–7 | Christmas Theme

$4.00 USD

Christmas order of operations worksheets for 5th grade and 6th grade: five December math case files, Mystery Detective style, PEMDAS and BEDMAS with parentheses and the four operations, no exponents and no negative numbers. Print and go with full answer keys: no prep math activities for math centers, early finishers, homework, morning work and sub plans. A secret Santa, a box of chocolates and carols down the hall carry the last week of term, each expression's answer crosses a suspect off the lineup, and a wrong answer matches nobody, so a CSI Mini Mystery Detective marks itself in the busiest week of the year.

December needs a lesson that holds a class on its own, and order of operations with a secret Santa to unmask holds a fifth grade class better than a plain page does. Because a skipped step lands on no suspect, students go back and do the steps in order themselves. One CSI Mini Mystery Detective math case a day and the last week of term runs itself.

The stories are all about Christmas: a Secret Santa gift, a box of chocolates under the tree and somebody singing carols down the hall. Each expression gives a number that matches one suspect. Students who work left to right instead of following PEMDAS will get a number that isn't there.

The Cases

  1. Who is Secret Santa - an unsigned Secret Santa gift
  2. Christmas Chocolates - chocolates left for someone
  3. Carving the Turkey - who will carve the turkey
  4. Acts of Kindness - good deeds at Christmas
  5. Christmas Carols & Songs - who has been singing

What's Inside

  • Five Christmas order of operations cases
  • Parentheses with all four operations
  • No exponents, no negative numbers
  • An answer key for each case
  • Teacher instructions

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

Every case is one page. Students solve the expressions, then cross off the suspect whose number matches each answer. One name is left when they're done.

When to Use This Resource

Use these in the weeks before winter break to keep PEMDAS practice going. The math isn't seasonal, so they work as order of operations review at other times as well. They're useful for small groups, sub days and class party days.

Grade Levels

Written for 5th grade and 6th grade. Confident 4th graders can try them once multiplication and division are secure.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • A Christmas story in every case
  • PEMDAS with parentheses
  • No prep
  • Students spot their own order mistakes

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
