Inside the case file

This November morning work for 5th grade is a Thanksgiving math spiral review set out as twenty CSI Mini Mystery Detective math worksheets, one for each school day of the month. Your class will get daily practice with fractions, decimals, long division, multi-digit multiplication, volume, the coordinate plane and the order of operations. It's 5th grade math review you can hand out as students walk in, use as a bell ringer, or send home as homework. It's no prep, and every day has an answer key.

Each morning brings a different fall case and a different kind of page, so students meet a fresh skill every day of November. Most of the pages are pictures to work from: number lines, fraction bars, unit cube stacks, a place value chart, a coordinate grid and a recipe card. Students cross off a suspect for every answer they get, which means they're checking their own work as they go.

When to Use This Resource

Start on the first school day of November and give out one case each morning. The days don't depend on each other, so you can also pick the one that matches what you taught the day before or skip a day without losing anything. Days 1 to 10 mix decimals, division and fractions, and Days 11 to 20 lean toward multiplying and dividing fractions, measurement and graphing. You could also use a single case for a small group, leave a few with your sub plans for the days before Thanksgiving, or keep them for test prep later in the year. A 6th grade class can use the pack as a review, and it works for homeschool too.

Grade Levels

Written for 5th grade, with every day matched to a 5th grade standard. Strong 4th graders can work through the decimal and measurement days, and 6th grade teachers can use it to review fractions and decimals.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

Every Mystery Detective pack works the same way. Once your class has solved one case, they know what to do with the next one, in this pack or any other. Each case also stands on its own, which means you can choose the one that fits what you're teaching that day. Naming the villain gives every page a clear end point, and the answer key lets you check a page quickly.
