Inside the case file

This November morning work for 4th grade gives your class a fall spiral review in 20 CSI Mini Mystery Detective math worksheets, one for every school morning of the month. Each day reviews a different 4th grade math skill, from multi-digit multiplication and long division to rounding, place value, fractions, decimals, angles, area and perimeter, elapsed time and money. Use it as daily math review, a bell ringer or a warm up before your math block. It's no prep, and there's an answer key for every day.

Each morning has its own Thanksgiving or fall case, with a new crime and a new set of suspects. Students solve the page, match each answer to a suspect's number and cross that suspect off, and they can tell for themselves when an answer doesn't match anyone. Most days are picture pages, so your class reads clocks, protractors, bar graphs and hundredths grids as well as doing the math. You get a full month of 4th grade review that looks different every day.

What's Inside

  • 20 one-page cases, each with 20 problems and a villain to find. That's 400 problems in all.
  • An answer key for every case
  • A skills page listing each day's skill and its Common Core standard

When to Use This Resource

The cases are in order for the 20 school days of November, but none of them depends on the one before. You can skip a day, swap two around, or pull out the one that matches this week's lesson. The skills page shows the standard for each day, so it's easy to see which case goes with which unit. Some cases also make a good check-in before a test or a quick review for students who need more practice. You can hand a single case to a small group, leave a few in your sub tub for the days before Thanksgiving break, send one home as homework, or keep them for review with a 5th grade class early in the year.

Grade Levels

Written for 4th grade and the 4th grade Common Core standards. It also works as fall review for 5th grade.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

Every Mystery Detective pack works the same way. Once your class has solved one case, they know what to do with the next one, in this pack or any other. Each case also stands on its own, which means you can choose the one that fits what you're teaching that day. Naming the villain gives every page a clear end point, and the answer key lets you check a page quickly.
