Inside the case file

This November morning work for 3rd grade gives your class a fall spiral review in 20 Mini Mystery Detective math worksheets, one for every school morning of the month. Each day reviews a different 3rd grade math skill, from multiplication facts, arrays and division to adding and subtracting within 1,000, place value, rounding, fractions, area and perimeter, telling time, elapsed time, graphs and measurement. It works right through the autumn harvest weeks, the Thanksgiving countdown and the short week before the break. It's no prep, and there's an answer key for every day.

Each morning has its own fall or Thanksgiving case, from a corn maze and a cocoa stand to a turkey trot and the big feast, with a new crime and a new set of suspects every day. Students solve the page, match each answer to a suspect and cross that suspect off until one villain is left. Many days are picture pages, so your class reads clocks, arrays, bar graphs, number lines and square grids as well as doing the math.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

A Mini Mystery Detective is a one-page math detective case. Students solve the problems, use each answer to cross a suspect off the list, and the last suspect standing is the villain. The pages check themselves - a wrong answer stops the mystery in its tracks, so students go back and find their own mistake before it ever reaches your grading pile.

When to Use This Resource

The cases run in order for the 20 school days of November, from the first fall mornings through the harvest weeks to Thanksgiving week and the days before the break. None of them depends on the one before, so you can skip a day, swap two around, or pull out the case that matches this week's lesson. Most teachers use them as morning work or a bell ringer, and they work just as well in math centers, small groups, sub plans, early finisher folders or as homework before a test.

Grade Levels

Written for 3rd grade and the 3rd grade Common Core standards. It also works as a fall review for 4th grade students who need extra practice.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

Every Mystery Detective pack works the same way. Once your class has solved one case, they know what to do with the next one, in this pack or any other. Each case also stands on its own, which means you can choose the one that fits what you're teaching that day. Naming the villain gives every page a clear end point, and the answer key lets you check a page quickly.
