Inside the case file

November morning work for 2nd grade with a Thanksgiving theme: twenty CSI Mini Mystery Detective math worksheets, one for every school day of the month. Together they make a full second grade spiral review of place value, adding and subtracting within 100, telling time, graphs, measuring, arrays and fractions. Print one page each morning for bell work or a quiet start to the day, or use them as fall math review in a center. They're no prep, and every case comes with an answer key.

Every morning brings a new kind of page. One day the class reads clocks at the Harvest Fair. Another day they add up the paths on a corn maze map or read a bar graph from the canned food drive. Students practice skills they already know, each one in a fresh setting, and they mark their own work by crossing each answer off the suspect list. It's an easy way to keep November math review going right up to Thanksgiving break.

What's Inside

  • 20 one-page cases, one for each school day in November, with 20 problems on each
  • A different type of page every day, mostly pictures and models: clocks, tens and ones blocks, number lines, rulers, graphs, arrays, pies and quilts
  • An answer key for every case
  • A teacher page that lists the skill for each day, grouped by strand
  • Teacher instructions, a contents page, a 20-day Detective's Case Log and a Morning Mystery Ace certificate
  • Black and white pages that print clearly

When to Use This Resource

This pack is planned for the twenty school days of November. The days move between number, measurement, data and geometry, so second graders keep practicing every strand they have learned since the start of the year. Each case takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, so it fits a morning work slot before the day's lesson begins. If you want to target one skill, every day stands on its own, and the teacher page shows which day covers what. You can use a case for bell work, early finishers, a small group, homework or homeschool practice, or leave one with sub plans in the busy days before Thanksgiving.

Grade Levels

Written for 2nd grade and the second grade standards it practices. It also works as fall review for a strong 1st grade class or as an early review for 3rd graders.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

Every Mystery Detective pack works the same way. Once your class has solved one case, they know what to do with the next one, in this pack or any other. Each case also stands on its own, so you can choose the one that fits what you're teaching that day. Naming the villain gives every page a clear end point, and the answer key lets you check a page quickly.
