Multiplying Fractions (with Simplifying) | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 5–6 | Printable Detective Pack

$4.00 USD

Multiplying fractions with simplifying worksheets for 5th grade and 6th grade: five math cases, each a Mystery Detective page where students multiply and reduce to lowest terms. No prep, print and go, full answer keys, for math centers, warm ups, early finishers, homework, test prep and sub plans. Each answer strikes a name, a place or a time off the clue lists and an unsimplified answer matches no clue, so these fraction pages insist on the last step without you saying a word, which is what a CSI Mini Mystery Detective does that a plain fraction page cannot.

Simplifying is built into every answer here, because an unreduced fraction matches no suspect, so students finish the job every time without being reminded. One case fits a period, so five of them make a self-marking week of the fraction unit, and any one of them works alone as a sub plan. It is math practice in a Mystery Detective format.

Every answer has to be in simplest form before it will match a clue. That gives students a reason to finish the last step instead of stopping at the product. The cases include a class prize, money found on the ground and a teacher who's been kidnapped.

The Cases

  1. Class Prize - who wins the class prize
  2. Lost Money - finding the owner of some money
  3. Box of Chocolates - chocolates left on the desk
  4. Kidnapped - a teacher taken from school
  5. Acts of Kindness - random good deeds

What's Inside

  • Five color case pages of fraction multiplication
  • Black and white copies of all five
  • An answer key for every case
  • Every answer simplified to lowest terms
  • Teacher instructions

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

Each case has a short story, the problems and clue lists, all on one page. Every clue has a value. Students cross off a clue when an answer matches it. The clues left at the end are the solution.

When to Use This Resource

Use this once multiplying fractions has been taught and students are working on their own. It's useful before a test, and as a refresher for 6th graders before mixed numbers. The cases can go home as homework, to a small group, into a sub folder or into a homeschool week.

Grade Levels

Written for 5th grade and 6th grade.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
