Multiplication & Division Facts CSI Mystery Worksheets | Grades 2–4 | Mad Scientist (×8 & ×9)

$4.50 USD

CSI Mystery Detective practice on the 8 and 9 times tables: multiplication and division CSI math worksheets for April, with the Mad Scientist loose in the school. Something has already been mixed, and 3rd grade and 4th grade students hold the ingredient list, so every fact they get right rules a suspect out and moves the antidote a step closer. It is fact fluency with a multiplication and division mystery attached instead of a timer, which is why the 8s and 9s stick. Students decode division facts through a key, check worked facts for errors, color the right arrow forward and finish on a code chart. Answer keys, color and black-and-white, print and go.

The Case: The Mad Scientist

Turning up to this school is always a bit of a lottery, and it has been worse since the Mad Scientist stopped being caught. Every student is watching the corridors now. Today something has already been mixed, somewhere in the building, and your students have the ingredient list and the facts they need to put it right - if they can still remember their 8s and 9s.

What's Inside

  • Division facts decoded through a key to name the first ingredient
  • A matching page where the line drawn passes through the letter that matters
  • Checking worked facts for errors and tallying which are correct
  • 8 and 9 times table multiplication used to color the correct arrow forward
  • Multi-step problems where the last answers unlock a code chart
  • Full color and black-and-white versions of every page
  • Answer keys for the whole case

What Is a CSI Mystery Detective Case?

A CSI Mystery Detective case gives math worksheets a job: name the culprit. Students solve, the answers rule suspects out one at a time, and the last one left is the arrest. It is a math escape room with the hardware removed - no locks, no app, no prep at all. Because the deduction depends on the arithmetic, detective activities get checked by the student rather than the teacher. It carries a whole math activity, drops into math centers, and works as a sub plan.

When to Use This Resource

  • Times table practice that is not another timed test
  • Consolidating the 8 and 9 times tables, usually the last two to stick
  • Math centers, early finishers and independent work
  • Emergency sub plans that run themselves
  • Back-to-school weeks and end of year review

Grade Levels

Built for 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade. The 8 and 9 tables are usually the last to become automatic, so third graders often work this one in pairs; fourth and fifth graders run it independently. It also suits 6th grade students who need their recall rebuilt before moving on to longer multiplication.

Why Teachers Love CSI Mystery Detective Cases

  • Zero prep - print and hand out
  • Self-checking by design, because a wrong fact breaks the deduction
  • Fact practice students ask to do again
  • Works as a whole lesson, a center, or a filler for an awkward afternoon

CSI Math Mysteries turn regular math practice into a clue-based investigation. Students solve problems, use their answers as evidence, and eliminate suspects until the case is solved.

3

Eliminate Suspects

4

Crack the Case

By the end, only one suspect remains and students can reveal the answer to the mystery.
