Multiplication Arrays and Word Problems | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 2–3

$4.50 USD

Multiplication arrays worksheets, equal groups activities, skip counting practice and multiplication word problems for 2nd grade and 3rd grade are all included in this no-prep Mini Mystery Detective pack of math worksheets. Ten detective cases carry one skill from the very first picture through to word problems with nothing drawn to lean on - perfect for math centers, morning work, early finishers, homework, small groups and review. Completely no prep - just print and go.

This is the stretch of multiplication that decides whether a child ever gets fluent with it: seeing a total as equal groups, then as rows and columns, then recognizing the same thing inside a sentence. Cases 1 to 5 give students the picture. Cases 6 to 10 take it away, and the cases get harder in order, so the same pack carries a class that is not all in the same place.

What's Inside

  • Equal groups as a model for multiplication - reading a set of equal trays as a multiplication fact
  • Arrays across the times table, from small ones a second grader can count up to six rows of nine
  • Skip counting on a number line - equal jumps of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 8s and 10s
  • Multiplication word problems in four wordings: equal groups, rows, columns, and how many go in each one
  • Deciding from the sentence alone which number is the group and which is the size of it, with 10 x 10 the biggest fact in the pack
  • Answer keys for every case

Ten cases to solve: The Bakery Trays, The Park Path Hops, The Library Rows, The Market Boxes, The Museum Tiles, The Lost Property, The Fire Drill List, The Farm Shop Eggs, The Harbour Nets and The Sports Day Kit.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

A no-prep detective activity where students solve math problems to cross off suspects and unmask the culprit. Skill practice plus critical thinking in one engaging, self-checking worksheet set.

The pages check themselves - a wrong answer stops the mystery in its tracks, so students go back and find their own mistake before it ever reaches your marking pile.

When to Use This Resource

  • Math centers and rotations
  • Morning work and bell ringers
  • Early finishers and fast workers
  • Independent practice and homework
  • Sub days and emergency plans
  • Small group work and intervention
  • Review before a multiplication unit test
  • The week you introduce arrays, and the weeks after it

Grade Levels

Designed for 2nd and 3rd graders. The early picture cases also suit advanced 1st graders, and the word problem cases give a struggling 4th grader a way back into multiplication without handing them work that looks younger than they are.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

  • Zero prep - print one page per student and hand it out
  • Self-checking, so students find their own mistakes instead of waiting for you
  • Prints clean in black and white
  • One skill, ten different pages - no page is the same worksheet twice
  • A detective hook that holds the students who groan at a worksheet

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
