Fractions CSI Mystery Worksheets | Grades 3–6 | Fraction Finders: The City Quest

$4.50 USD

Fraction word problems, simplest form and mixed numbers for 5th grade, run as a CSI Mystery Detective treasure quest under the city. The tunnels are dark and full of decisions, and every one is settled by a fraction: word problems decide which way to turn, simplest form gets students past the traps, and improper fractions turned into mixed numbers tell them how far is left to walk. The CSI math worksheets come in color and black and white with answer keys, ready to print for February. Students circle letters on a grid using fraction answers to reveal a direction, and one last fraction problem settles the mystery.

The Case: The City Quest

There has always been talk of treasure somewhere under the city. Plenty of people have gone looking for it over the years, and none of them have come back to say whether the stories are true. Your students have decided to go anyway. The passages below the city are dark and full of decisions, and the only thing down there that can be trusted is the math.

What's Inside

  • Fraction word problems that decide which way to turn at a junction
  • Circling letters on a grid using fraction answers to reveal a direction
  • Converting fractions to their simplest form to get past the traps
  • Converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and reading the whole number
  • A final fraction problem that settles how far there is left to walk
  • Full color and black-and-white versions of every page
  • Answer keys for the whole case

What Is a CSI Mystery Detective Case?

A CSI Mystery Detective case is what a math escape room becomes when you take the locks away and keep the deduction. Students solve, strike a suspect off the line-up, and keep narrowing until one name is left. Nothing to cut, nothing to install, nothing to prepare. Unlike ordinary math worksheets it cannot be drifted through, because an error leaves more than one suspect standing and the class can see it. A math activity that fills a lesson, suits math centers, and works as detective activities for early finishers.

When to Use This Resource

  • Fraction review before or after a unit test
  • Math centers, early finishers and independent work
  • Emergency sub plans that run themselves
  • End of year review, when attention is thin and the work still has to happen
  • Whole-class detective sessions, small groups or partner work

Grade Levels

Built for 5th grade, and it works across 4th grade and 6th grade depending on where your class is with fractions. Fourth graders usually need support on the improper fraction pages; sixth graders finish it inside a lesson and treat it as revision.

Why Teachers Love CSI Mystery Detective Cases

  • Zero prep - print and hand out
  • Self-checking by design, because a wrong answer breaks the deduction
  • Fraction practice students will actually finish
  • Works as a whole lesson, a center, or a filler for an awkward afternoon

4

Crack the Case

By the end, only one suspect remains and students can reveal the answer to the mystery.
