Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 8–11 | Algebra

$4.00 USD

Solving quadratic equations by factoring worksheets for Algebra 1: five math cases, each a Mystery Detective page where students factor and find both roots. No prep, print and go, full answer keys, for warm ups, early finishers, homework, test prep and sub plans across the factoring unit. Solving quadratic equations by factoring for Algebra 1, from simple trinomials to a leading coefficient, inside five cases written for older students. It suits warm ups, homework, test prep and sub plans through the factoring unit, and every CSI Mini Mystery Detective page is self-marking.

Factoring is the part of the quadratics unit that needs volume, and a stolen phone and a hacked website make twenty equations the part students want to get through. Each pair of roots eliminates a suspect, so the marking is student-led, and the leading coefficient cases sort out who is ready for the test. Each CSI Mini Mystery Detective math case fills a period.

The Cases

  1. The Missing Gradebook - no number in front of x squared
  2. The Bungling Burglar - no number in front of x squared
  3. The Missing Mascot - a leading coefficient to deal with
  4. The Stolen Phone - a leading coefficient to deal with
  5. The Hacked Website - mixed review of everything above

What's Inside

  • Five case files, each a page of quadratic equations solved by factoring
  • Cases ordered by difficulty, from a leading coefficient of one to mixed review
  • A suspect lineup beside the equations, so each answer rules one out
  • A contents page listing what every case covers
  • A full answer key for all five cases
  • Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is a printable case: one crime, one lineup of suspects, and the equations that eliminate them. Every suspect carries a value, the roots students find produce those values, and a correct answer strikes that name out until one is left. It runs like an escape room with no locks and no app, and correct factoring is the only way to the culprit.

When to Use This Resource

This set belongs in the practice half of the quadratics unit, once the class can factor a trinomial on the board and needs to do it alone. Because the cases are ordered by difficulty, you can hand out the first two while a group is still finding its feet and keep the mixed review for revision week. Everything a student needs is printed on the page, so it works as a sub folder resource without a handover.

Use it for warm ups, early finishers, homework, test prep, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a whole class, a small group or one student.

Grade Levels

Written for Algebra 1, which is usually 8th grade or 9th grade. It also suits a 10th grade class revising factoring before quadratic functions, and students repeating the topic.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • A factoring error is caught by the lineup, not at marking time
  • The design and the writing suit older students
  • Five cases ordered by difficulty, so you can differentiate by case
  • No preparation at all beyond pressing print

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
