5th Grade Emergency Sub Plans | Mystery Detective Worksheets | No Prep Relief Day Pack

$5.00 USD

Emergency sub plans for 5th grade: ten no prep math worksheets in a CSI Mini Mystery Detective style, math your substitute can hand out with no teaching. Each page is one case on one 5th grade math topic, so it covers a full day or a week of math. Print one page per student, and the answer keys stay in your folder.

What's Inside

Ten one-page cases, each on a different 5th grade math topic:

  • Multi-digit multiplication, 2 digit by 2 digit and 3 digit by 2 digit
  • Adding, subtracting and rounding decimals to hundredths
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
  • Order of operations with parentheses
  • Long division with 2 digit divisors
  • Dividing with unit fractions
  • Multiplication and division word problems
  • Area and perimeter of rectangles
  • Reading a line plot in halves and quarters of an inch
  • Volume of rectangular prisms

The ten cases are The Book Order Mix Up, The Snack Cart Slip, The Paint Can Puzzle, The Locker Code Case, The Field Trip Split, The Rope Cut Caper, The School Fair Files, The New Court Plans, The Leaf Length File and The Stockroom Stack. There's an answer key for every case.

What is a Mini Mystery Detective?

Students solve the problems on the page and cross a suspect off the list for each correct answer. One suspect is left at the end, and that's the villain.

Why This Works on a Sub Day

  • Print one page per student. There are no materials.
  • The directions are on each page, so the substitute doesn't have to teach
  • Students can tell when an answer doesn't match a suspect
  • Each case takes about 25 to 35 minutes
  • Use the cases in any order, to match what your class has been learning

When to Use This Resource

Keep a set in your sub folder or sub tub for days you can't plan ahead. The cases are also handy for math centers, bell ringers, early finishers, homework and end of year review.

Grade Levels

Written for 5th grade. 6th graders can use the cases as back to school review, and advanced 4th graders as a challenge.

Why Teachers Love Mystery Detectives

  • Ready to print
  • The answer keys can stay in the folder
  • Ten 5th grade topics in one pack
  • Every figure is easy to read on a black and white copier

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
