4-Digit Subtraction with Regrouping | Mystery Detective Worksheets | Grades 3–6 | Christmas Theme

$4.00 USD

4 digit subtraction with regrouping Christmas math worksheets for 3rd grade and 4th grade, five Mystery Detective math cases with borrowing across four columns on every page. No prep December math activities with full answer keys, print and go, for math centers, early finishers, homework, morning work and sub plans. Four digit subtraction with regrouping is the biggest borrowing of the year, and this pack gives 3rd grade and 4th grade students a school Christmas reason to practice it. It is December math that runs as a math center, a sub plan or a homework set, and every CSI Mini Mystery Detective page is self-marking.

Keep this one for the week before the break, because a class can run these CSI Mini Mystery Detective math cases without you at the front and a substitute has nothing to explain. Students subtract, match each answer to a suspect and cross that name off, so the marking is student-led even on the biggest borrowing of the year.

The Cases

  1. Missing Marshmallows - the marshmallows disappear overnight
  2. Teachers Christmas Lunch - who cooked the staffroom lunch
  3. Christmas Presents - who gets to unwrap first
  4. Missing Candy Canes - stripped straight off the tree
  5. Christmas Star - who puts the star on top

What's Inside

  • Five case files, each with a crime sheet and its own lineup of suspects
  • Four digit subtraction with regrouping on every page
  • Borrowing across four columns, the hardest subtraction at this level
  • Each answer matches one suspect and no other, so the page checks itself
  • A full answer key for every case
  • Print and go: no cutting, no laminating, nothing to prepare

What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective is a printable case with a lineup of suspects, each carrying a number. The questions on the crime sheet produce those numbers, a correct answer strikes one suspect off, and the last name standing is the culprit. The elimination only works when the math is right, which is what makes these detective activities show up mistakes a page of math worksheets would hide.

When to Use This Resource

Four digit borrowing is the skill that most needs repetitions and least often gets them, and November and December is when the timetable has the least room for it. Five short cases fix both problems at once. Because one wrong borrow puts the wrong name in the frame, students trace the error back through the columns themselves instead of handing you the page.

It covers test prep, homework, math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans, homeschool lessons and spiral review, with a class, a small group or one student.

Grade Levels

Written for 3rd grade and 4th grade, where four digit subtraction sits in the standards. Fifth graders use it as a fluency refresher, and second graders take it once three digit borrowing is secure.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Five pages on the hardest subtraction third and fourth graders meet
  • Students trace a wrong borrow back when the wrong name comes off
  • No prep in the busiest month of the year
  • Works with a whole class, a small group, partners, or one student alone

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

Self-checking built in
4
STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
