What Is a CSI Mini Mystery Detective?

A CSI Mini Mystery Detective puts a crime, a lineup and a page of math in front of your class, and the only way to name the culprit is to get the math right. Each suspect carries a number, each solved question matches one of them, and that suspect is crossed off until a single name remains. Because a wrong sum eliminates the wrong person, these detective activities make students check their work in a way math worksheets cannot.

When to Use This Resource

Use this in December once three digit carrying is secure, when you want the class moving on to four columns and you need it to happen without a fight. The Christmas setting buys you the attention and the math underneath is unchanged. A carry dropped in the thousands column names the wrong suspect, so students go back and check rather than waiting for the page to be graded.

Teachers use it for test prep, homework, math centers, morning work, early finishers, sub plans and homeschool lessons, with a class, a small group or one student.

Grade Levels

Written for 3rd grade and 4th grade, where four digit addition sits in the standards. Fifth graders take it as a quick refresher, and second graders manage it once three digit carrying is secure.

Why Teachers Love These Cases

  • Moves the class up to four columns without a fight
  • Students check their own work when the wrong suspect comes off
  • No prep in December
  • Works with a whole class, a small group, partners, or one student alone
