Case Summary

Something has gone missing from the hundreds chart, and the only suspect is a two-digit number that knows how to cover its tracks. Your students grab their pencils, pull on their detective coats, and step up to the scene — the only way to name the culprit is to follow the math.

The first break in the case is a coded message. Students decode it to reveal their lead, then track the suspect through the patterns it left behind: skip counting by threes and fours across the hundreds chart, circling the numbers that fit and crossing off the ones that don't. With each pattern, the lineup of suspects gets shorter.

Then the witnesses take the stand. A full page of addition and subtraction problems within 100 narrows the field down to the final two — but neither suspect is talking. In the last interrogation, a hundreds-chart puzzle forces the truth out and reveals exactly which number pulled off the heist.

Hand your students the evidence, point them at the suspects, and let them prove they can crack the case. The math is the only thing standing between them and the truth.
