Case Summary

A three-digit number is somewhere out there between 100 and 1,000, and it has no intention of turning itself in. Your students pull on their detective coats, sharpen their pencils, and report to the crime scene — the only way to identify the culprit is to follow the math.

The case opens with a coded number puzzle. Students crack it to line up their first set of suspects, then dig into the evidence: breaking numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones, ordering three-digit numbers in a police lineup, and sorting the odd suspects from the even ones. Every clue clears a few more numbers from the board.

Then the witnesses weigh in. Students work 10-more and 10-less, 1-more and 1-less clues across hundred-chart pieces to corner the final suspects — but the truth is still hiding. In the last interrogation, a completed hundreds chart forces the guilty number into the open at last.

Hand your students the evidence, point them at the suspects, and let them prove they can crack the case. The math is the only thing standing between them and the truth.
