3rd Grade Emergency Sub Plans | Math Mystery Worksheets | No Prep Substitute Packet

$5.00 USD

Ten self-checking detective cases that need no prep and no explaining — each page is one case and one 3rd grade math topic, and runs 25 to 35 minutes. A substitute hands out a page, students solve, match each answer to a suspect, and cross suspects off until one is left standing. The answer keys are built in, so nothing comes back to be marked. Print it once, leave it in the emergency folder, and it covers a day at no notice — then keeps earning as spiral review, math centers and early finisher work.

Quick Details

Skill: 3rd grade review, one math topic per case · Grades: 3–4 · Format: 10 mysteries + full answer keys (printable PDF) · Theme: School detective

The 10 Mysteries

The Art Room Trays — Every tray has been tipped out and stacked in rows, so students count the rows, count each row and multiply.

The Packed Bag Puzzle — The cloakroom bags were repacked and the labels are wrong; the question mark can be the total or the group size.

The Paper Chase — The paper store has been raided, and students check the sign each time and line the digits up.

The Smudged Register — The register is smudged: some clues want the value of a digit, some 10 or 100 more or less.

The Field Trip File — Two-step problems: work out the rows or boxes first, then add or take away.

The Bell Tower Case — Each clock shows a start time, and students add the minutes to find the finish.

The Whiteboard Line — Most numbers on the hallway line have been rubbed out; the ones left show how big each jump is.

The Library Loan List — A pictograph with the totals torn off, where half a counter is worth half.

The Playground Plan — Count the squares inside for area, and the units around the edge for perimeter.

The Shared Supplies — The number above each bar is the whole box, and students work out what the shaded part is worth.

Why Teachers Love It

This is the folder you want already full when you wake up ill. Nothing to photocopy on the way in, nothing a substitute has to teach, and nothing to mark afterwards. Ten different topics fill a whole day without any page feeling like the last, and each one is timed to a real lesson block.

Skills Covered

Multiplication with arrays and equal groups, division and missing factors, addition and subtraction, place value and 10 or 100 more and less, two-step word problems, elapsed time, number lines and skip counting, reading a pictograph with a key, area and perimeter, and fractions of a set — plus logical reasoning and deductive elimination as students rule suspects out clue by clue.

What's Included

Printable one-page mystery worksheets, one math topic on each, suspect line-ups, complete answer keys with the villain marked, and student instructions a substitute can read straight off the page — all in one PDF.

Best Used For

Emergency sub plans, planned absences, relief days, spiral review, math centers, morning work, homework, early finishers, indoor recess, and test prep for grades 3–4.

How Math Mysteries Work

Each Math Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn math practice into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

CASE FILE 5 MYSTERIES

Every set is a ready-to-solve investigation

Students become the math detective. They read a story, crunch the numbers, and use their answers as evidence to rule out suspects — until only the culprit is left standing.

1
STEP 01

Read the Case

Each mystery opens with a short, themed story that sets the scene and tells students exactly what they're trying to find out — who took something, what went missing, or what really happened.

Hooks them in seconds
2
STEP 02

Solve the Problems

Students work through a set of problems built around the target skill. Every answer is a clue — so there's a real reason to get each one right.

Focused skill practice
3
STEP 03

Eliminate Suspects

Students match their answers against the suspect list and cross off names one clue at a time. Wrong math means the wrong suspect — so the activity self-checks as they go.

STEP 04

Crack the Case

One suspect is left — and students reveal who did it. The payoff makes review feel like a win, and they're ready to start the next case.
