How the Reading Mystery Works

Your students become Reading Detectives. They read the nonfiction passage about ecosystems and food webs, then answer comprehension questions to gather evidence. How Reading Mysteries Work

Each Reading Mystery resource gives you five one-page cases that turn close reading into a clue-based investigation. Here's exactly how a case plays out.

Case Briefing

Every set turns reading practice into a case to crack

Students step into the role of Reading Detective. They read closely, pull evidence straight from the text, and use it to rule out suspects — one clue at a time — until only the culprit is left.

THE EVIDENCE BOARD · 4 STEPS TO CRACK IT
01

Read the Passage

Each case opens with a short, themed reading passage that sets the scene and names what's gone wrong.

Hooks them fast
02

Hunt for Text Evidence

Students answer comprehension questions — and every answer is a clue pulled straight from the words on the page.

03

Work the Suspect Line-Up

They match each clue against the suspect board and cross off names. A wrong answer points to the wrong suspect — so it self-checks.

04

Name the Culprit

One suspect is left standing — and students crack the case. The reveal makes review feel like a win, every time.

Why Teachers Use Reading Mysteries

Skill practice that feels like a case worth solving — and a download that quietly does a lot of your planning for you.

Why teachers keep their students on the case

5 cases per set 0 prep or setup Color & black-and-white Answer keys included

Builds Real Close Reading

Students must return to the text and use evidence to answer — so they're practising comprehension, inference, and text-evidence skills, not just guessing.

Self-Checking by Design

The right answers rule out the right suspects, so accuracy matters — and the included answer keys mean there's nothing for you to grade.

Hooks Reluctant Readers

The whodunit format gives even hesitant readers a reason to keep going. Reading practice starts to feel like a game, not another worksheet.

Truly No-Prep

No cutting, laminating, apps, or logins. Print in color or black-and-white and hand them straight out — that's the entire setup.

Fits Any Routine

One case as a warm-up, or spread five across the week for centers, partner work, early finishers, sub plans, or intervention.

Differentiation-Friendly

Great for on-level practice, an extension for advanced readers, or a targeted review pass for anyone who needs another go at the skill.
